Position: Undergraduate Non-Duke Student – Wastewater Field Sampling & Processing Lab
The Student Research Assistant will support time-sensitive wastewater field sampling and initial sample handling/processing for two active dietary wastewater research awards (Swann Lee and Schmidt Sciences). This role is essential for maintaining strict sampling schedules, ensuring sample integrity, and preparing samples for downstream DNA-based analyses.
The position works as part of a Duke student field sampling team and follows established lab and safety SOPs.
Collect wastewater samples on a fixed schedule, including early morning or time-sensitive pickups
Support deployment, retrieval, and maintenance of sampling materials (containers, coolers, labels, PPE, autosampler accessories per SOP)
Verify sampling location, date/time, and conditions; document deviations or issues
Maintain a clean, organized workflow to minimize contamination
Label samples using project-approved conventions; verify identifiers against sampling plan
Maintain temperature control (ice packs/coolers) and transport samples promptly
Follow chain-of-custody documentation and ensure secure handling
Perform receipt checks upon arrival (volume, labeling, container integrity, temperature)
Perform basic processing steps immediately after collection (e.g., aliquoting, mixing, subsample prep, adding preservatives)
Prepare samples for storage (−20/−80°C) or handoff to lab staff
Clean and disinfect work areas and reusable supplies
Enter metadata into the designated tracker (date/time, site, sampler ID, volume, storage location, anomalies)
Maintain clear records of sample transfers and storage locations
Report sampling/processing issues promptly
Coordinate logistics with the field sampling team lead (schedule, route planning, supply restocking)
Participate in check-ins and adhere to weekly sampling coverage plans
Provide coverage for planned absences when possible
Current enrollment as an undergraduate science student at a community college or equivalent
Eligible to work as a non-Duke student
Dependable transportation to sampling sites and Duke facilities
Ability to follow detailed SOPs, maintain accurate records, and communicate clearly
Ability to lift/carry field supplies (coolers) and stand/walk for extended periods
Prior experience with lab or field sampling, sterile/clean handling, or environmental sample collection
Comfort working with biological/environmental materials using PPE
Experience with basic data entry and shared trackers (Excel/Sheets or similar)
Complete required safety training (PPE, biosafety, waste handling, lab/field safety)
Work under supervision and follow lab/institutional safety policies
Work hours aligned with fixed sampling days and time-sensitive processing needs (may include early mornings)
High reliability is required due to strict sampling frequency and processing constraints
