Research Assistant in Molecular Biology

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The research team of Assistant Professor Sean Rudd is focused upon gaining a better understanding of chemotherapies currently employed in cancer treatment, and in particular how the metabolic processes within cancer cells can be exploited to enhance the efficacy of these therapies. Dr Rudd’s team is placed within the Helleday Laboratory, a multidisciplinary translational research group comprising of 30-40 scientists, which is located at the Stockholm node of Science For Life Laboratory, a national centre for molecular biosciences containing state-of-the-art high-throughput technology platforms.

Your mission

We are looking for a highly motivated and lab experienced Research Assistant to join Dr Rudd’s research team. Your main task will be to assist the on-going research projects in the group. This will entail using a variety of molecular/cell biology techniques in close collaboration with team members in order to deliver high-quality data in a timely manner.

In more detail, you will contribute to further understanding the role of the enzyme SAMHD1, a deoxynucleoside triphosphate triphosphohydrolase, in the metabolism of chemotherapies currently employed in cancer treatment. This work will follow on from our previous studies identifying SAMHD1 as a drug resistance factor in some haematological cancers (PMID: 28067901; PMID: 28401188) and our recent efforts to target this enzyme to overcome this barrier to treatment efficacy (PMID: 31950591).

Your profile

The following qualifications are required:

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • An MSc (or currently undertaking an MSc) in cell/molecular biology or equivalent discipline.
  • Documented lab experience. Being able to plan, perform and evaluate scientific research is required.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and GraphPad Prism.
  • Cell lab experience in handling and culturing cancer cell lines is required, previous experience with cell lines derived from haematological malignancies is a merit.
  • Previously documented experience with techniques such as Western blot and cell death/viability assays is required. A strong merit would be previous experience with liquid handling equipment and microwell plate-based assays, in addition to multicolour flow cytometry, to assess cell death in cancer cell lines.
  • Previously documented experience working with antimetabolite chemotherapeutics and DNA precursor pool metabolic enzymes, such as SAMHD1, would be a strong merit
