Applications are invited for a Research Assistant \ Associate to undertake the development of a magneto-optical B-field probe to measure the strength of a.c. magnetic fields within high-power microwave resonators. The post is funded by Innovate UK.

An enthusiastic and highly motivated individual is sought possessing a strong background in experimental (applied) physics, electrical engineering, or physical chemistry. Experience in the areas of low-noise analogue circuitry, rf and microwave resonators, lasers, fibre optics, magnetometry and temperature control, are all highly desirable.

To develop a hand-held magneto-optical probe for measure the flux density of magnetic fields at microwave frequencies inside equipment.

Duties and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • To creatively design, construct, operate and modify experimental apparatus incorporating low-noise analogue, rf and microwave electronics, lasers, fibre optics and temperature controllers.
  • To oversee the physical design, cutting and polishing of anisotropic magneto-optic crystals using traditional, by-hand prism-making techniques.
  • To write, debug and document programs/scripts in Matlab, COMSOL, Mathematica, Labview, Python, SolidWorks.
  • To communicate effectively with other specialist within a consortium comprising entomologists, instrumentation companies.
  • Preparedness to make overnight trips to other parts of the UK.
  • Awareness and implementation of procedures relating to intellectual property.
  • Report and “pitch” to stakeholders and investors encompassing VCs, company directors and academics.  
  • To manage and maintain a small research lab contain rf, optical and magnet-related equipment.
  • To take responsibility for organising resources and effective decision making in support of research.
  • To promote the reputation of the Group, the Departments and the College.

Essential requirements

Candidates/post holders will be expected to demonstrate the following:

Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Materials, Chemistry, Physics or a related scientific/engineering discipline.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.

  • Design and construction of physics-based lab experiments and instrumentation (as detailed in Key Responsibilities above).
  • Optical and quantum-mechanical modelling of materials and devices.
  • Familiarity with experimental physical chemistry –handling of chemicals; the fabrication and characterization of materials (XRD, UV-Vis-NIR, Raman, PL, DSC, …)
  • CAD and programming skills in support of the above.
  • First/principal-authorship of high-impact papers and/or patent inventorship.
