The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a talented, motivated and experienced researcher to develop new materials for Na-ion battery anodes based on carbon and carbon/Sn composites. Na-ion batteries are a sustainable alternative to Li-ion batteries on their way to becoming commercial. This project will address some of the burning challenges in the field related to high capacity anodes operating at high rates as well as the challenging understanding and engineering of the solid electrolyte interface.
You will be responsible for disseminating the results in scientific meetings and international conferences and engaging with the rest of the battery team to ensure the best collaborative outputs.
You should have expertise in Na-ion battery research in particular hydrothermal synthesis of carbon materials and engineering carbon morphology to create unique Sn/C composites. In addition you should be familiar with the techniques used for battery assembly (coin and pouch cells) as well as all the needed electrochemical techniques required for battery characterisation. Also experience with synchrotron-based X-ray techniques for in operando battery characterisation, in particular X-ray Absorption and X-Ray Pair Distribution Function is required.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 – £39,183 per annum.
