Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate to work in the Photoactive Materials Group led by Dr Rachel Evans in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge. The overall project aim is to design bioinspired luminescent photonic structures to improve the light-collection efficiency of indoor photovoltaic devices. This full-time post is funded by EPSRC's New Horizons Scheme and is offered on a fixed-term contract of 18 months to start on 1st July 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The aim of this post will be to characterise the optical properties of waveguide-encoded lattices, prepared by our project partners in McMaster University, Canada, led by Prof. Kalai Saravanamuttu, and to devise a workflow to integrate and test these photonic structures with photovoltaic cells for indoor light harvesting. The Cambridge and McMaster teams will work closely on this project and depending on Covid-19 restrictions, there may be the opportunity to undertake a short stay working with the McMaster team.

Applicants must have a strong background in solar energy research, with demonstrated experience in the characterisation and construction of photovoltaic devices (EQE, J-V etc.). A working knowledge of photophysical and optical characterisation methods (e.g., time-resolved luminescence, ellipsometry, microscopy) would also be desirable. Experience in modelling light propagation would be advantageous (e.g., ray tracing optics (Monte Carlo) and/or finite element or finite time domain).

The successful applicant must have (or be about to obtain) a relevant PhD and will have good communication skills. The candidate will be required to undertake research and day-to-day management of this research project, as well as preparing manuscripts for publication. A high degree of competence in one or more of the research areas, an aptitude for critical thinking and a flexible approach to collaborative research are vital.

Successful candidates who have not been awarded their PhD by the appointment date will be appointed as a Research Assistant at Grade 5 (£26,715 - £30,942 per annum). Upon award of the PhD the individual will be promoted to Research Associate, Grade 7 (£32,816 - £40,322 per annum).
