Research Assistant/Associate in Soft Robotics Sensing and Self-Healing

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering to work on an EU funded project Self-Healing Soft Robotics (SHERO). The post is available in the first instance until 31 May 2022, with the possibility of extension

The SHERO project aims to develop self-healing functional materials for the use in soft robotics applications. Based on the theoretical and technological bases developed, we aim to develop soft robotic platforms that can demonstrate the basic functionalities and advantages. For these purposes, the post holder is expected to conduct investigations and development of functional materials, soft robot platforms as well as dissemination of achievements through various communication channels. There will be collaboration with project partners which requires smooth communication and team work.

The post holder will help to support and maintain the University's national and international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The successful candidate will join the Bio-Inspired Robotics Lab in the Department of Engineering, and will be expected to make a contribution to excellence in research. The role holder will participate in the overall contribution of the department/faculty, as appropriate.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are a first degree in a relevant discipline and a PhD degree (or about to be awarded a PhD degree) in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, material science, or a related area; Expertise is sought in (one or more of) the following areas: biologically inspired robotics, soft robotics, modelling and simulation of biological systems, soft matter modelling and analysis.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Salary Ranges: * Research Assistant: £26,715 - £30,942 *Research Associate: £32,816 - £40,322

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 May 2022 in the first instance.
