Doctoral Research Associate

(part-time 75%, salary level TV-L E13)

The position is available for the duration of three years and is expected to start in spring 2021. Currently, the regular working time in Germany for full (100%) employment is 39 hours and 50 minutes per week.

The position is in Benedikt Wirth's research group and is part of a DFG-funded research project (jointly held with Thomas Huser's group at the University of Bielefeld) in the interdisciplinary DFG Collaborative Research Centre 1450 "InSight". It focuses on mathematical research in mathematical imaging and data processing, or more specifically, on fast variational interpolation and approximation methods for manifold-valued data from real microscopy experiments. The research will be suitable for a PhD thesis topic. The successful candidate will benefit from the stimulating environment and facilities of the Cluster of Excellence "Mathematics Münster: Dynamics – Geometry – Structure".

Research tasks in the project will include:

•  design and analysis of data interpolation and approximation methods for time-dependent manifold-valued data
•  combination of image registration and optical flow techniques with data approximation methods
•  numerical implementation of the developed methods and code optimization for realtime application
•  application to real physical data in cooperation with physicists from the University of Bielefeld

Requirement profile:

•  a master's degree in mathematics
•  good skills in numerical analysis (for instance approximation theory)
•  interest in rigorous mathematical analysis and in the interface between differential geometry and computation
•  good programming skills
•  ability to work independently and in a team
•  a high level of motivation and enjoyment in scientific work
•  good English communication skills (German language skills are not required, but a willingness to learn is desirable)
