Role Overview

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position analysing X-ray observations of galaxy clusters with Dr Helen Russell at the University of Nottingham.

The successful candidate will play a lead role in the analysis of new XRISM observations of cluster cores that were awarded to PI Russell in Cycles 1 and 2. Built and operated jointly by JAXA and NASA, with participation from ESA, XRISM’s exceptional spectral resolution allows detailed mapping of the dynamics of cluster atmospheres.

This position is funded by a 5-year Leverhulme Trust award, “The physics underpinning feedback from supermassive black holes”, and includes generous funding for conference travel and computing equipment.

Applicants with experience analysing X-ray observations and research interests in supermassive black hole or galaxy cluster physics are especially encouraged to apply.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should:

  • Have, or be close to completion of, a PhD in astrophysics or a related subject area

  • Have experience analysing X-ray observations

  • Demonstrate relevant research interests in galaxy clusters or supermassive black holes

Application Process

Applicants should complete the online submission form and attach:

  • A copy of their CV

  • A publications list (if not included in the CV)

  • A description of research interests and relevant work to date (up to two pages)

Contract Details

  • Funding available until 31 August 2029

  • Flexible start date, preferably by 1 October 2026

  • Full-time position (36.25 hours per week)

  • Job share arrangements may be considered

The successful candidate will join the Astronomy Group in the School of Physics & Astronomy at Nottingham. The group has a collaborative focus on extragalactic astronomy, with expertise spanning observations, theory, numerical simulations, and machine-learning analyses.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

As part of the School’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, shortlisted candidates will be offered the opportunity to speak with a member of staff representing women, racially minoritized people, LGBTQIA+, or disability communities. This conversation will be separate from the assessment process and will not influence appointment decisions.
