Duties and responsibilities

Dr Huai-Ti Lin’s laboratory, based within the Department of Bioengineering, is seeking to appoint a Research Associate. The post is funded by the BBSRC to investigate the neural encoding of aeroelasticity in insect wings. We use large flying insects such as the dragonfly as model systems to understand how sensory encoding of mechanosensory and proprioceptive information contributes to flight control. This work requires performing fine-scale electrophysiology on insect neurons, morphological analyses on mechanosensors and high-speed kinematics recordings of flying insects. The lab has the state-of-the-art ultra-light wireless neural telemetry system that enables monitoring sensory and motor signals from freely flying insects. Essential requirements

You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in areas related to neuroscience, neurobiology, biomechanics or animal physiology. You should also demonstrate sufficient experience and expertise in fine-scale dissection and electrophysiology. Alternatively you should demonstrate abilities to take on such tasks. Scientific computing skills in Matlab, Python, or C++ are advantageous, but you do not need to be a software engineer. You need to demonstrate competency in analysing electrophysiology data. You should have excellent organisational skills and be able to work toward deadlines with the level of independence expected of a PhD. You will be highly motivated and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You must be able to interact with other researchers and students in the group and provide mentorship whenever appropriate.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant with salary range £35,477- £38,566 per annum until the PhD certification is processed.
