About the team

This position is part of the UWA Centre for Medical Research with the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, based at Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research (Perkins) in Nedlands. The Centre has significant links across the Western Australia health sector and provides teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students across the medical disciplines. A core priority is medical and clinical research, and a number of substantial research groups are based in the Centre’s laboratories. You will be situated with Professor Forrest’s Systems Biology and Genomics Lab and embedded within the Western Australian Cancer Single Cell Consortium

About the opportunity

As a Research Associate you will autonomously perform bioinformatics analyses of single cell gene expression datasets to predict cell-to-cell communication between different cell types within tumours.

You will design, perform, observe and analyse a wide variety of research laboratory tasks and experiments. You will also write reports regarding experiments and draft manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

The research you perform will contribute to fundamental insights into tumour biology and lead to new approaches for therapeutics, earlier diagnosis and better targeting of personalised therapies.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • A PhD or equivalent in bioinformatics, computer science, molecular biology, genomics, systems biology, cell biology or similar field
  • Analysis experience with single cell sequencing datasets and cell-to-cell communication
  • Evidence of published articles using next generation sequencing data
  • Experience with programming (e.g. R and python), documenting, testing and reusing code
  • Experience with bioinformatics analysis pertaining to transcriptomics and genomics
  • Ability to work independently with well-developed organisational skills and an ability to meet deadlines
