Research Associate in Computational Biology

University of Cambridge

United Kingdom

We are recruiting a Research Associate (Computational Biologist) in the Systems Cancer Pathology group at the CRUK Cambridge Institute, led by Dr Raza Ali. The role, at the leading edge of high dimensional single cell spatial analysis in cancer, involves working as part of a diverse team including pathologists, cancer biologists and computational biologists

The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in a quantitative discipline (e.g. computer science, computational biology), is a highly motivated scientist with an interest in understanding high dimensional imaging (imaging mass cytometry) data of the cellular spatial dynamics of tumours using quantitative methods. The candidate will work with Dr Raza Ali, group leader and academic pathologist. Ours is a young team combining wet and dry lab.

Our aim is to understand how the phenotypic dynamics and adaptive potential of tumour ecosystems drive relapse and resistance, with a focus on breast cancer. We are assembling imaging datasets of unprecedented depth and size in both observational studies and clinical trials. This will enable us to unmask spatial phenotypic traits that emerge during disease progression and treatment, and to identify those that drive prognosis and therapeutic response. The successful candidate will lead the analysis of a large breast cancer study encompassing thousands of samples to understand how the tumour microenvironment organises, its relationship to cancer genetics and to clinical outcome. A key aim will be to develop the data into an accessible resource that can be visualised and readily interrogated by biologists.

The role offers extensive training in tissue pathology, statistical methods for linking clinical information, analysis of high dimensional imaging data, as well as the unique opportunity to tackle these novel data and help set analytic standards. Single cell spatial proteomics is a fast-developing field, and there will be ample opportunity to develop new independent research arcs that complement ongoing studies, including developing software for novel workflows and integration with complementary modalities. The institute is equipped with dedicated infrastructure for distributed computation (of which our existing workflows already take full advantage) allowing for rapid, scalable analysis of burgeoning multiplexed tissue imaging data.

The laboratory of Dr Ali (https://www.cruk.cam.ac.uk/research-groups/Ali-group) is part of the Grand Challenge and is core funded by Cancer Research UK (http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/).

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to Dr Raza Ali at Raza.Ali@cruk.cam.ac.uk

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security check.
