Research Associate in Computational Morphodynamics

Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral Research Associate position in the group of Professor Henrik Jönsson at the Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University, to carry out fundamental research in the field of quantitative plant development. The project will focus on quantitative experimental approaches to elucidate regulatory mechanisms for growth and development of plants. The group applies Computational Morphodynamics, where live imaging is combined with theoretical modelling to understand regulatory processes. A focus is on the plant shoot, but stretch to interesting dynamical systems beyond the shoot. Molecular biology and quantitative imaging techniques are expected to be a main part of the expertise required. The project will build on a close connection with computational and theoretical scientists within the group. The successful applicant should have a strong interest in solving problems using interdisciplinary and quantitative approaches within plant development and will have the opportunity to develop skills in advanced image processing, quantification, and theoretical modelling.

Applicants must have, or be close to obtaining a PhD in developmental or plant biology, genetics, molecular and cell biology or related field. Proficiency in experimental work and using confocal microscopy is required. Candidates must have advanced knowledge of molecular biology and imaging approaches. Expertise in working with plants is beneficial, but not necessary. Experience in quantification techniques is also advantageous.

The successful candidate will be fully involved in the basic research in these areas whilst also writing up their research work for presentation and publication. The post holder may be required to assist in the supervision of student projects, provide instructions to students and deliver seminars relating to their research area.

Good communication skills are essential as the post holder will need to work well in a team and collaborate with other researchers in the Institute. Candidates should also demonstrate a history of science communication (e.g. presentations, outreach activities, teaching) and have a proven track record of scientific publication.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

Where a PhD has yet to be awarded the appointment will initially be made at Research Assistant level (Grade 5) and amended to Research Associate (Grade 7) upon the award of PhD.
