Research Associate in Evaluation of Mandatory Calorie Labelling

The MRC Epidemiology Unit and the Centre for Diet & Activity Research (CEDAR) is offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and talented mixed-methods post-doctoral Research Associate to contribute to evaluating the impacts of mandatory menu calorie labelling in the English out-of-home food sector.

The UK government intends to implement mandatory calorie labelling in out-of-home food outlets in the next few years. Our evaluation will include five components:

• In store assessments of calorie labelling practice, before and after intervention implementation
• Intercept surveys with customers, before and after implementation
• Analysis of international survey data to determine overall use of out-of-home food outlets before and after implementation
• Expansion and analysis of MenuStatUK, our database of the nutritional content of out-of-home food, to assess impact of the intervention on the nutritional content of food served
• Interviews with those tasked with intervention implementation and enforcement to understand barriers and enablers to intervention success.

As the successful candidate you will work with the principal investigator, Dr Jean Adams. You will act as overall project manager and lead on the delivery of components 3, 4 and 5 above. Components 1 and 2 will be delivered by colleagues at the University of Liverpool with support from you as needed. You will prepare detailed protocols for components 3, 4 & 5; gain ethics approval for components 3 & 5; collect data for component 5; and analyse data and prepare peer-reviewed publications for components 3, 4 & 5. In addition, you will organise project and advisory group meetings, prepare interim and final reports and other outputs, and contribute to Public Involvement (led by co-applicant Prof White) and contribute to other aspects of the project and running of the department as required.
