Role Description

Research Associate in Experimental Atmospheric Science

Department

The University of York’s Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) wishes to recruit a Research Associate to investigate the contribution indoor sources of air pollutants have on outdoor air quality. The position is part of a large NERC INGENIOUS (UnderstandING the sourcEs, traNsformations and fates of IndOor air pollUtantS) project. The research requires new field measurements to be made using a sophisticated mobile laboratory developed by WACL and the development of new data analysis approaches to improve the source apportionment of air pollutants in the urban environment. Such quantification is challenging but presents a highly rewarding opportunity for new insights into this important, growing area of research. The post is available from 1st April 2022 for a period of 36 months.

WACL is the largest dedicated atmospheric chemistry facility in the UK, home to more than 65 researchers with interests in all aspects of atmospheric chemistry. Role

You will work with Professors David Carslaw and James Lee and the INGENIOUS project team to carry out research, conducting experimental and data analysis studies to quantify the impacts of indoor air pollutant sources on outdoor air quality. The aims of the project will be achieved through the use of static and mobile laboratory measurements in Bradford and York using a suite of sophisticated instruments including a fast-response mass spectrometer (a Selected Ion Flow Mass Spectrometer, SIFT-MS).

The interpretation of field measurements will require the development of new data analysis approaches to source-apportion the different contributions of emissions sources to key pollutants, to characterize and quantify them. WACL has extensive expertise in both the measurement of air pollutants and the analysis of data from field instruments, which this role will build on.

The role will provide the opportunity to conduct individual and collaborative research projects and provide guidance to other staff and students, as required, as well as coordinating the work of small research teams. The role will provide excellent opportunities for presentation of the results nationally and internationally and their publication in leading journals.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • A first degree in chemistry, physics or environmental / natural science and a PhD in experimental atmospheric science or similar
  • Knowledge with a range of measurement techniques and data analysis methodologies to engage in high quality research
  • A good understanding of air pollution sources (outdoor and indoor), their chemical transformation and dispersion in the atmosphere
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills and ability to write-up work for publication.
  • UK driving license (or equivalent)
