Role Description


The Mental Health and Addiction Research Group (MHARG) within the Department of Health Sciences is looking to appoint a Research Associate You will be part of a growing global health research team working on applied health research projects focused on multimorbidity in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).

In the role, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team on projects within the overall programme of work, including a seed-funding project on tuberculosis multimorbidity (TB MM). The TB MM project aims to set up a Network in South Asia and Africa, and to carry out evidence syntheses and secondary data analysis to support a larger future programme of work to address mental and physical health multimorbidity in TB.


  • To conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research
  • To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects
  • To conduct systematic reviews and meta-analyses of the literature to identify clusters of conditions causing multimorbidity burden in people with TB, and evidence-based interventions and care packages to address them.
  • To contribute to secondary analysis of survey data
  • To support establishing a global network of academics, policy makers and practitioners working on TB, co- and multi- morbidities to take forward further research in this area
  • To write up research results and disseminate results through public engagement and outreach activities including organising and supporting workshops
  • To assist with undergraduate teaching in own area of expertise

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • First degree in a subject relevant to health research and PhD in subject relevant to applied health research or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of literature review methods, in particular systematic review and meta-analysis methods to engage in high quality research and ability to undertake relevant research to the project
  • Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies and research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy and goals
  • Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research and writing up research work for publication and literature reviews.
  • Experience of conducting workshops, including co-design approaches.
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media and ability to work as part of a team and also independently
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals for own and joint research and conduct individual and collaborative research projects.
  • Ability to use a range of computer software packages including for example literature review and qualitative data analysis software such as Covidence, Endnote and NVivo
  • Ability to identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds
  • Competency to make presentations at conferences or exhibit work
  • Willingness to travel as needed for delivery of the research programme

This is a fixed-term contract for 18 months.
