Role Description

The Epidemiology & Cancer Statistics Group (ECSG) is looking for enthusiastic researchers to work as part of our team.  We welcome applicants with research interests in epidemiology and statistics, with particular interest in those working in the cancer field. The successful applicants will work on projects embedded within the Haematological Malignancy Research Network’s (www.hmrn.org) population-based cohorts. The patient cohort comprising individuals diagnosed with haematological cancers, and the general population cohort comprising unaffected individuals. Both cohorts are linked to the same national administrative datasets (hospital episode statistics, cancer registrations, and deaths); and members of the patient cohort are also tracked through clinical systems, the information collected including data on diagnostic and prognostic markers, treatment episodes, and outcomes.  

Funded by Cancer Research UK and Blood Cancer Research UK, HMRN was established by ECSG and their clinical collaborators in 2004 with the aim of providing accurate population-based research outputs on the occurrence, treatment and survival of patients with haematological cancers.

Condition of Employment

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Consequently, all applicants will be asked to declare both unspent and spent convictions on their application form.

Appointment of the successful candidate will be conditional on a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Role

With experience in epidemiology and/or statistics, you will conduct research in the area of haematological cancers; including the analysis and interpretation of data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods; writing up of results and dissemination through publications, presentations and public engagement activities. You will contribute to the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies, and undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities connected to ECSG’s research.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • First degree in a relevant subject and PhD in relevant area (epidemiology or statistics)
  • MSc in epidemiology and/or statistics is desirable
  • In-depth knowledge of epidemiological methods and data analyses
  • Good working knowledge of statistical methods applied to observational data and of the UK’s routinely compiled administrative health datasets
  • Knowledge of cancers and NHS processes to enable high quality research is desirable
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience
  • Competency and experience to conduct research projects, develop proposals and write up research for audit and publication.
  • Ability to identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds
  • Experience of managing and analysing large observational datasets
  • Experience of working with software packages such as Stata and/or R
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also to work independently using own initiative

This is a fixed term contract for 36 months
