Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate on an EPSRC-funded research project at Imperial College London. The project aims to develop soft robotic technologies for endoscopy, capable of delivering diagnosis and therapy inside the body with various degrees of autonomy.  

You will be combining soft everting robots, soft continuum manipulators, and fibre-based actuators into a multi-scale robotic platform. Soft robotics is an integral part of the programme, and it will involve the design, manufacture, integration of the various components, including fluidic actuation and proprioceptive sensing modalities. The prototypes will be manufactured in our state-of-the-art facilities, and they will be tested by using surgical phantoms representative of endoscopic surgery. 

Duties and responsibilities

 


    • You will develop soft robotic technologies for endoscopy, identifying and developing suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data.  

    • You will contribute to the development of publications and further funding in this field, promoting the reputation of the Hamlyn Centre. 

Essential requirements

 


    • For appointment at Associate level you will hold a PhD in the general area of (a) soft robotics, (b) surgical robotics, (c) mechatronics, or a closely related discipline or equivalent research or industrial experience. 

    • You must have practical experience in a broad range of techniques including design and manufacturing of soft robots, soft everting robots, mechatronic systems. 



    • You must have strong knowledge in at least two areas of soft robotics, surgical robotics and mechatronics. 

Further information

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 - £41,388 per annum.
