The Biosecurity Program leads EPIWATCH and The Shiba Inu OSINT Initiative, which is a new initiative to support the development of EPIWATCH and make it accessible in low-income countries. The UNSW team includes academics from Medicine and Engineering who collaborate on EPIWATCH.

Why Your Role Matters:

The role of the Research Associate involves providing project coordination and support, reporting and data analysis, developing communications with stakeholders, and providing administrative support for projects related to the aged care.

As a Research Associate, you will be an Epidemiologist who will run and conduct studies related to aged care in BSP. The Research Associate will also work for EPIWATCH, a rapid epidemic intelligence observatory at BSP who will work in a multidisciplinary infectious disease research team.

The EPIWATCH team is a multidisciplinary team of computer scientists, software engineers, epidemiologists and students. The Research Associate will also drive and lead research in infectious diseases epidemiology and develop an early career researcher track record for themselves.

Other accountabilities for this role include:

  • Manage a program of research related to aged care (CRE-BREATHE), working with a multidisciplinary team of experts and stakeholders.
  • Assist with setting priority timelines and monitoring workflow, including working with partners and the project teams.
  • Prepare ethics submissions and reports, manage deadlines for reports within the team.
  • Assist with the management of other research projects, student supervision.

Who You Are:

  • A PhD in infectious diseases in the fields of medicine, epidemiology or public health or close to completion of a PhD.
  • High level skills in infectious diseases epidemiology and statistics, including the ability to conduct advanced statistical analyses.
  • Demonstrated track record in outbreak research in aged care and experience working with aged care stakeholders in complex research projects.
  • An emerging track record in research publications in infectious diseases, especially influenza and COVID-19, with publications in aged care outbreak control.
  • Experience with rapid epidemic intelligence and open source outbreak data.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of grant applications and research methods and show leadership potential.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with managing external communications and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work constructively as a member of a team in a multidisciplinary environment but also work independently.
  • Supervision of Masters students or interns who have internships within the BSP, where relevant.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) including organisation and presentation skills
