To work within the Group of Dr Betty Chung at the Department of Pathology in Central Cambridge, within a BBSRC-funded programme aimed at molecular biological studies of translation control. Specifically, to undertake research to investigate RNA ThermoSwitch-mediated translation in plants. Successful applicant will also expect to interact with collaborators at John Innes Centre. Main duties:

*To undertake research aimed at molecular biological studies of translation control.

*To identify, develop and apply a broad range of techniques to pursue the research objectives.

*To interact and coordinate projects with collaborator - Lomonossoff Laboratory, John Innes centre, Norwich.

*To present scientific work at seminars within the Laboratory and at external meetings.

*To contribute to Laboratory-wide discussions on developments within the field.

*To draft scientific papers, and contribute to the overall preparation of research for publication.

*To assist in the training of PhD Students and other members of the Chung Laboratory.

*To assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies.

Working relationships:

You will report directly to Dr Betty Chung and will interact and collaborate with other Postdoctoral Scientists, Research Support Staff and Students, not only in the Chung laboratory Group, but also across the Department of Pathology and with external Groups as necessary.

Academic qualifications:

Applicants should have (or about to obtain) a PhD in a relevant subject.

Technical skills and expertise:

Experience of and ability to perform techniques relevant to the project. Particularly useful would be:

*Experience of plant molecular biology.

*Experience with work on translation/protein synthesis or related areas such as transcription or RNA biology.

*Experience of high-throughput sequencing technologies such as Ribosome profiling, ChIP-Seq, RNAseq.

Key responsibilities:

Within the overall direction of the programme, the Group, the remit of the project and in discussion with the Group Leader, you will make a significant input into determining the direction of the project within a three year lifespan.

To plan your own work and objectives on a 12-month basis and manage your experimental work within the project along with your Supervisor.

To ensure the research is carried out in accordance with good practice and in compliance with local policies and legal requirements.

To contribute to the smooth running of the Group, including the effective use of resources, training of others and taking responsibility for use of communal facilities.

To enhance your research and generic skills through a tailored development programme.

Track record of research:

Must have a demonstrable track record of first author publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.

Additional information:

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 March 2024 in the first instance. Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
