Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Medical Research

University of Cambridge

United Kingdom

We seek a highly skilled and motivated researcher with a background in cryo-electron microscopy to join the laboratory of Alan Warren in The Cambridge Institute for Medical Research on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. We offer an exciting opportunity to join a group working at the forefront of cryo-EM. You will have access to outstanding facilities and be able to use them as part of a world leading research programme.

Cambridge is an outstanding place to work with cryo-EM. You will have access to the University of Cambridge's state-of-the-art cryo-EM facility, including a 200 kV Talos Artica and 300 kV Titan Krios with direct electron detectors for high-resolution structure determination. You will also have access to the electron microscopes at the Diamond Light Source Electron BioImaging Centre as part of our Block Allocation Group. In addition, we have excellent dedicated computing infrastructure set up specifically to support cryo-EM data processing. You will be based on the same campus as the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, a world-leading centre for cryo-EM with a unique concentration of expertise and innovation.

The Warren lab is based in the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research and uses genetics, biochemistry and structural studies to investigate the molecular mechanisms of eukaryotic ribosome maturation to understand how corruption of this process causes disease. Recent publications include: Tan et al. Blood 2019 doi: 10.1182/blood.2018893404; Kargas et al. eLife 2019 doi: 10.7554/eLife.44904; Zyryanova et al. Science 2018, doi: 10.1126/science.aar5129; Warren AJ. Adv Biol Regul doi: 10.1016/j.jbior.2017.09.002.

You will work independently on cryo-EM data processing and structure determination, but you will have ample opportunity to develop your own research focus as well as work on data acquisition, sample preparation and screening if desired. We are keen to build the skills of young researchers and train new cryo-EM practitioners. The position offers excellent opportunities to be involved in training and supervision.

You will have a PhD in a relevant area of the biological sciences with expertise in cryo-EM data processing. They will have experience of relevant software packages, data collection on the Titan Krios or Talos Arctica electron microscopes and structure determination. You will have good technical communication and teaching skills with a record of high quality research publications.

Appointment to Senior Research Associate is dependent on qualification and skills and will be determined during the recruitment process. It is subject to approval by the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine.
