We are currently seeking a postdoctoral scientist to join a collaborative international multidisciplinary team to work on a research project funded through the EPSRC’s Healthcare Technology Challenge Award scheme aimed at developing bioelectronic technology to transform healthcare. The successful candidate will join highly motivated and well-funded research teams across the School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine, and Faculty of Engineering  Sciences.

Bioelectronic medicine is an exciting new area using electricity to treat disease. This research aims to develop a new bioelectronics medicine approach to treating disease based on wireless electrochemical technology. These new bioelectronic therapeutic tools will be used to treat cancer non-invasively, moreover, it will offer a new wireless approach to modulating the central nervous systems’ cellular electrical activity in a targeted manner, with positive implications for treating central nervous system based diseases. A multidisciplinary team spanning the Science, Engineering, and Medical Faculties in Nottingham, has been brought together to realise the vision. The post aims to apply in-house developed wireless electrochemical systems to treat disease. It will exploit wire and nanoparticle technology to actuate cell behaviour (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsami.8b22075, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0021979720316817), for example by enhancing electric field effects in cancer cell models. In addition, you will use CNT porins inserted into cell membranes to modulate action potentials in stem cell-derived neuronal cells. 

This work will be based within the Division of Regenerative Medicine and Cellular Therapies, located with the School of Pharmacy within the newly opened Biodiscovery Institute and led by Dr Frankie Rawson. The candidate will be required to undertake research and day-day management of this research project that requires a high degree of competence in one or more of the research areas listed. An aptitude for critical thinking and a flexible approach to collaborative research is essential.

Candidates should have a PhD thesis completed (or close to completion) in Chemistry, Materials, Engineering Pharmacy, or related discipline.

The post is offered on a full time (36.25 hours per week), fixed term contract until 1 April 2024, with an approximate start date for July 2021. Job share arrangements may be considered.
