Research Associates in Lattice Gauge Theory and Quantum Field Theory

Applications are invited for two postdoctoral positions funded by Professor David Tong's EPSRC New Horizon Grant and his Simons Foundation Investigator Award.

One position (Post A) will be in lattice gauge theory, working on the problem of putting chiral gauge theories on the lattice. The candidate is expected to have experience in Monte Carlo simulations.

Candidates for the second position (Post B) should be qualified to undertake research more broadly in some area of quantum field theory, including lattice gauge theory, topological phases of matter, strong coupling dynamics, supersymmetric theories, or string theory.

The successful candidates will have completed (or nearly completed) a PhD in Theoretical Physics or a closely related area prior to their appointment, and will have demonstrated a capacity to produce world-class research. Duties will include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research projects. The role holders will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required. They must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. They may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating their research area.

There will also be opportunities to collaborate with other theoretical physicists in DAMTP. These include Christopher Thomas and Matthew Wingate, working on lattice gauge theory, and many others working on more formal aspects of quantum field theory.

Appointment of the successful candidates is expected to start on, or before, 1 October 2021.
