Research Fellow in Cryo-Transmission Electron Microscopy

Do you have an established background in Cryo-Transmission Electron Microscopy (Cryo-TEM) and want to use cutting-edge methods to investigate a fascinating scientific problem? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

This project focuses on biomineralization processes, in which organisms achieve remarkable control over crystallization to generate structures such as bones, teeth and seashells. Key to the formation of these remarkable materials is that crystallization occurs within confined volumes. However, the importance of confinement in biomineralization processes is only beginning to emerge. This project will address this problem using advanced imaging techniques to watch how inorganic crystals grow within confined volumes and to image the inorganic/ organic interface. In addition to conventional methods you will use cryo-TEM, cryo-electron tomography and liquid-phase TEM to characterise the early stages of development of these systems, where the University of Leeds houses some of the best macroscopy facilities currently available in the UK. This will enable us to answer the question “how does confinement control crystallisation?” and will provide new insight into biomineralization processes. You will help address this challenge. The post is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and you will work within the group of Prof Fiona Meldrum (School of Chemistry) whose expertise lies in biomineralization and crystallization.

The successful applicant will have a PhD (or close to completion) in the biological or physical sciences involving significant use of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cryo-TEM.
