Role Description


This post will be based within the Mental Health and Addictions Research Group at the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York. The group, in collaboration with the Tobacco and Alcohol Group at University College London, has been awarded a large research grant in the area of tobacco smoking and mental illness. The overall aim of the programme is to assess the feasibility, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation and reduction in people with mental illness. It will include a randomised controlled feasibility study, followed by a fully powered randomised controlled trial. The study population will consist of people who live in the community and are receiving care for their mental health condition under the care of NHS mental health trusts.

We are looking for an experienced research fellow to join the interdisciplinary research team of academics, clinicians and service user/carer representatives. The post presents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and highly motivated person to develop their own career in an excellent research environment, joining a large and highly successful multi-disciplinary Department renowned for its methodological expertise and commitment to research with high impact on policy and practice.

Condition of Employment

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Consequently, all applicants will be asked to declare both unspent and spent convictions on their application form. Appointment of the successful candidate will be conditional on a Disclosure and Barring Service check.


As the senior research fellow on this research programme, you will be centrally involved in and manage the preparation and undertaking of mixed-methods research as part of an interdisciplinary team. Supported by the Programme Leads, Dr Elena Ratschen from the University of York and Prof Lion Shahab from University College London, you will prepare the set-up of the research in the early stages, manage a small sub-team team of fulltime and part-time researchers and engage comprehensively with a variety of academic, clinical and PPI stakeholders involved with the research. You will conduct research and substantially contribute to publications and other outputs from the research, be involved in national and international dissemination activities (including conferences), and use your initiative to contribute to the development of future research. You will also contribute to closely aligned other research programmes in the area of smoking and mental illness that are already underway. You will also contribute to and/or lead the obtaining of external research funding. Mentorship, training and experimental learning to further develop research skills and expertise will be provided.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • A first degree in a health related subject and a PhD in a relevant area (e.g. health services research, mental health, tobacco research) or equivalent experience in academia or the NHS.
  • Experience with planning, setting up , managing larger research programmes or trials involving mixed methods research
  • Competency and experience in conducting individual and collaborative research projects and supervising the work of others 
  • Advanced and specialist IT knowledge
  • Experience with project and team management
  • Excellent communication (orally and in writing), analytical and problem solving skills
  • Outstanding commitment to high quality work, a keen interest in the research topic and attention to detail.
