Role Description

Department

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious full-time research fellow to join an expanding research team working on translational, stress and psychosomatic research at the Department of Health Sciences in the University of York. This is an exciting time to be working in this area. This research theme is led by professor Christina van der Feltz-Cornelis, who was appointed as an Anniversary Chair psychiatry and epidemiology at the Mental Health and Addiction Research Group (MHARG) in the department of Health Sciences in 2018. She is an internationally renowned researcher in the interface between physical and mental health and you will be working under her supervision.

Professor van der Feltz-Cornelis acquired funding to work on a translational project exploring the pathogenesis of functional neurological disorders, the CANDO study. You will expand the work of her team to investigate the psychological dimension of people with long-term medical conditions such as chronic pain, or diabetes and depression, and to develop our understanding of medically unexplained conditions such as functional neurological disorders.

Role

You will conduct research contributing to the development of interventions and to acquire funding for large-scale trials in the areas mentioned above in the interface of physical and mental health. As the post develops, you will manage your emerging trials-based portfolio. You will help disseminate our research through data analysis of trial data and clinical cohorts, writing papers and by mobilising our emerging research knowledge. You will liaise closely with trial recruitment centres to maintain our excellent track record in the delivery of evaluative research. You will participate actively in the planning and management of research projects, including supervising the work of others and providing expert advice and guidance. You will liaise with the research funders to ensure the timely delivery of the project and provide progress reports where possible.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have a PhD in applied health research or a relevant science based subject such as psychology or health psychology, related to translational, stress and psychosomatic research, chronic pain or diabetes and depression, or in exceptional circumstances substantial relevant experience at an equivalent level. You will have excellent communication and management skills, combined with experience of trial project management and evidence of working with NHS partners to deliver large-scale studies in the interface of mental disorder and chronic medical conditions. You will have good statistical knowledge in SPSS and STATA. Experience of writing up research work for publication, with evidence of first or co-author publications in applied mental health research is essential as is experience in research in chronic pain, medically unexplained symptoms, functional neurological disorder or related fields.

Closing date: 24 March 2020

Starting salary will be £40,322 per annum. The post starts on 1 July 2020 for a period of 24 months. It is a full-time position (37 hours per week).

Appointment of the successful candidate will be conditional on a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
