Vacancy: Senior Academic Staff in the Field of Electron Microscopy for Materials Science

Part-time (50%)


Position

As a member of the Senior Academic Staff (Dutch: Zelfstandig Academisch Personeel, ZAP), you will contribute to the University of Antwerp’s three core tasks: education (40%), research (40%), and services (20%). Your role may also include organisational and managerial aspects.


Education

  • You will provide high-quality education.

  • Your teaching role will evolve along with the study programmes and language certificates obtained.

  • You will teach the courses “Advanced Electron Microscopy” and “Projects on Microscopy and Spectroscopy” in the Master of Physics.

  • You will help develop activating, student-centred, and competence-driven programme components.

  • You will supervise students during their Bachelor and Master dissertations.


Research

  • You will expand high-quality scientific research in electron microscopy for materials science. Your focus will be on the experimental study of materials for energy and sustainable development using advanced electron microscopy.

  • You will initiate research lines, coordinate project progress, and participate in ongoing programmes.

  • You will acquire and manage national and international research funding.

  • You will publish in international journals and specialist literature, including top 10% journals (JCR, WoS-category).

  • You will develop an international scientific network.

  • You will supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.


Services

  • You will play a role in providing academic and public services, both within the institution and beyond.

  • You will participate in student recruitment and science outreach.


Profile

  • You hold a PhD in Physics or Materials Science.

  • Your research qualities align with faculty and university policies, including an excellent portfolio of top 10% publications.

  • Your teaching skills are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision, and you are motivated to develop them further.

  • If you do not speak Dutch (the administrative language), you are willing to achieve CEFR B2 proficiency. For teaching roles, you must reach CEFR C1 proficiency.

  • You have leadership potential, organisational skills, integrity, creativity, and a collaborative mindset.

  • You have experience obtaining research funding or managing multi-year research programs.


What We Offer

  • A part-time appointment as Senior Academic Staff for up to 3 years, renewable after a positive evaluation.

  • Appointment level (assistant professor to full professor) based on professional experience and academic qualifications.

  • Salary according to ZAP pay scales, proportional to employment percentage.

  • Employment benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and commuting reimbursement.

  • Planned start date: 1 February 2026 or soon thereafter.

  • You will work primarily at Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating environment.
