The Opportunity

Monash University’s faculty of IT is Australia’s leading research facility, and is strongly committed to the idea that technology can, and should, be the driver of good social outcomes.  This philosophy is not just confined to Australia: Monash researchers aim to achieve good global outcomes, and to assist those who need it the most, in some of the most under-developed regions in the world.

To that end, we are seeking the services of two talented Research Fellows, who are committed to making a difference, for a project based on Bangladesh that has two key foci:

  1. Working with domestic workers in Bangladesh, designing information systems specifically tailored to their needs; and
  2. The provision of agricultural information for farmers; helping make sure that this advice is authentic and up to date, and can be relied upon.

Several challenges exist, such as: working in a difficult environment; working with user groups who may not be literate; and achieving technology-focused outcomes in an under-developed region.  However, these challenges mean that the outcomes are even more meaningful!

Desirable skills and knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Bangla language
  • Track record of planning and conduct of action research
  • Experience of ethnographic research
  • Experience of working in cross-cultural environments
  • Good knowledge of participatory design and evaluation
  • Strong qualitative data analysis skills

Whilst initially a two-year term, there is significant scope for this to extend in the right condition.

These are full-time positions; however, flexible working conditions may be negotiated.

At Monash University, we are committed to being a Child Safe organisation. Some positions at the University may require the incumbent to hold a valid Working with Children Check.
