Research Fellow in the Design and Simulation of Quantum Heterostructures and Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in the design and simulation of quantum heterostructures, intersubband devices or quantum cascade lasers? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities?

We are seeking a research fellow to join a large £1.4M EPSRC-funded project focussing on the coherent control of quantum systems using terahertz (THz) pulses, and the generation of ultrashort THz pulses using quantum cascade lasers. The successful candidate will work closely with experimental researchers to investigate and understand the coherent interaction of short THz pulses with quantum heterostructures, leading to the design of new quantum cascade laser devices suited to passive mode-locking. You will design and optimise quantum heterostructures suited to the experimental observation of non-linear phenomena including Rabi-flopping and self-induced transparency at THz frequencies. Using time-domain simulation techniques you will interpret experimental THz-pump-probe data to understand the interaction of intense THz pulses with these systems. You will then use this understanding to design new quantum cascade laser heterostructures suited to passive mode-locking, and simulate the electron and photon dynamics of these systems.

You will join a world-leading terahertz group at the University of Leeds, with state-of-the-art growth, device fabrication, and terahertz experimental facilities, and expertise in the design and measurement of quantum cascade lasers.

You will have a background in laser physics/condensed matter physics, and experience in the design and simulation of quantum heterostructures. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, a proactive approach to problem solving, and be comfortable interacting day-to-day with academics of all career stages.
