Work tasks

One of the greatest challenges we are facing today is finding solutions to secure food supplies under the
pressure of a growing population, climate change and decreasing biodiversity. At the same time, changes in
dietary habits force us to think how to produce healthy and nutritious food with high ecological and ethical
principles. To meet the goals of sustainable food production, novel and innovative genetic approaches are
needed to enhance breeding programmes in agriculture and aquaculture. In combination with improved
phenotyping systems, functional genomic methods and novel genome editing technologies, genomics
alongside with genomic selection approaches provide new foundations for breeding for resilience, e.g.
improving disease resistance as well as possibilities to reduce the use of chemical pesticides or
antimicrobial agents.

Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is looking for a research professor in the field of applied
agricultural genomics. The person we are looking for is a leading expert in the field of genomics, cell biology
and molecular breeding. The new professor will join and strengthen genomics and breeding research in
Luke. This research area brings together scientists and experts working on genomic selection and
quantitative genetics, molecular genetics and genomics, and molecular breeding of food crops, forest trees,
livestock and farmed fish. Luke works in close collaboration with commercial breeders and national forest
breeding and genetic resources programmes. Luke is simultaneously seeking a new research professor in
the field of quantitative genetics and the two professors are expected to work as a pair.
