Work tasks

One of the biggest challenges we face today is finding solutions to secure food supplies under the pressure
of a growing population, climate change and biodiversity loss. Achieving the goals of sustainable food
production requires novel and innovative genetic approaches to enhance breeding programmes in
agriculture and aquaculture. At the same time, the transition to a more sustainable economy requires
sustainably produced renewable raw materials, and forest tree breeding must help to meet these demands.
Improved phenotyping systems utilizing digitalization and new sensor technologies together with novel
genome technologies are creating massive data sets which can be utilized for breeding purposes through
genomic selection. This development requires strong input from the computational and quantitative genetics
fields in order to fully utilize the potential of the data for the genetic improvement of animals and plants.
Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is looking for a research professor in the field of quantitative
genetics. The person should be a leading expert in the field of animal breeding and have a strong future vision
of the field. The new professor will join and strengthen genomics and breeding research in Luke. This research
area brings together scientists and experts working in genomic selection and quantitative genetics, molecular
genetics and genomics, as well as the molecular breeding of food crops, forest trees, livestock and farmed
fish. Luke works in close collaboration with the breeding industry, national forest breeding and genetic
resources programmes. Luke is simultaneously seeking a new research professor in the field of applied
agricultural genomics and the two professors are expected to work as a pair.

co-develop the research strategy in the focus area of genetics and breeding together with research managers,
professors and leading scientists.

The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. in quantitative genetics, animal or plant breeding, statistical genetics
or a similar field. The successful applicant should have competence in quantitative genetics, statistical
genomics, large-scale data analysis, and mathematical modelling as well as senior level research experience
on modern selective breeding approaches, particularly genomic selection, and a good understanding of
commercial breeding programmes.

A strong proven track record is needed on relevant scientific publications in international peer-reviewed
journals as well as in applying and securing research funding. The successful applicant should possess good
co-operational skills and have strong international academic and industry networks. The person should also
