Summary Description

The Center for Climate Systems Research (CCSR) in the Earth Institute at Columbia University invites applications for a Research Scientist position in Earth System Science. The Research Scientist conduct research to improve our understanding of interactions between socioeconomic change, emissions, atmospheric composition, climate and health that will help advance the performance of Earth system models.

The successful candidate will use GISS Earth system models and multiple sources of observed data to study the effects of COVID-19 lockdowns on atmospheric composition, climate, and human health. The successful candidate will also use these tools to evaluate variability and trends in atmospheric composition and emissions of trace gases, with the goal of improving the GISS Earth system model and making modeled biosphere emissions more dynamic and adept. The Research Scientist will be expected to perform original research, present the results of the research at scientific meetings, publish first-author papers in peer-reviewed journals, and lead the development of competitive grant proposals.

Demonstrated experience in the following areas is required: extensive experience with novel techniques to detect and attribute climate change, experience with single-forcing simulations; statistical techniques to assess equilibrium climate sensitivity from multiple lines of evidence.

Applicants should have established a high-impact, multidisciplinary research program; demonstrated a record of significant research contributions through publications in peer-reviewed journals and success in raising external funding; and be able to contribute broadly to research at CCSR and GISS
