Overview

Colorado School of Mines—a top-ranked R1 STEM university dedicated to applied science and engineering—is seeking a Budget and Financial Analyst II to join the Office of Budget and Financial Planning. As part of the Finance, Administration, and Operations division, this position will provide financial forecasting, reporting, and strategic analysis—primarily for Academic Affairs and select administrative units. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Budget and Financial Planning, the Analyst will serve as a trusted partner across the university, supporting institutional projects and advancing financial planning and budgeting practices.

This role may have a hybrid work schedule (in Colorado), with routine on-campus presence required.


Key Responsibilities

Budgeting & Forecasting (20%)

  • Develop financial models to forecast revenues and expenses.

  • Build annual and long-term funding models for assigned units.

  • Lead reporting initiatives related to multi-year projections.

  • Project mandatory costs and auxiliary revenues.

Data Visualization & Reporting (20%)

  • Create financial dashboards and reports.

  • Maintain and improve scheduled reports based on campus needs.

Financial Analysis (20%)

  • Analyze forecasts and reports; produce executive-level summaries.

  • Develop models to support strategic decision-making.

  • Provide benchmarks and performance metrics against industry trends.

Institutional & Departmental Projects (15%)

  • Support strategic initiatives with data gathering, modeling, and reporting.

  • Recommend process improvements and assist with documentation.

Portfolio Development & Support (15%)

  • Serve as financial consultant for assigned departments and offices.

  • Communicate models, reports, and findings clearly across audiences.

Learning & Development (5%)

  • Enhance skills in Tableau, Workday Adaptive Planning, and financial modeling.

Other Duties (5%)

  • Complete additional responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance, or related field.

  • At least 2 years of professional experience.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills.

  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Workday, Adaptive Planning).

  • Ability to analyze large, complex datasets.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in accounting, business, finance, or related field.

  • Higher education financial experience.

  • Proficiency with financial modeling and data visualization tools (Adaptive Planning, Tableau).

  • Experience with higher education fund and cost accounting.

  • Advanced communication skills and ability to brief executive audiences.


Salary & Benefits

Annual Salary Range: $72,000 – $82,000 (based on education, experience, and internal equity).
