Researcher in Horse Breeding and Genetics

Catholic University of Leuven Department Biosystems

The research group “Livestock Genetics” within the division Animal and Human Health Engineering, department Biosystems at the KU Leuven, Belgium is looking for a motivated (junior) researcher to work in the field of breeding and genetics of horses. The Livestock Genetics group computes several breeding values for jumping ability and conformation of Warmblood horses. Moreover, we are involved in disease oriented research in Warmbloods and draught horses using genomic information.

We are looking for a motivated person, eager to conduct focused research, and willing to participate in ongoing research in other animal species.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the extension of our breeding value procedures applying classical BLUP animal models and later on integrating genomic information (ssBLUP). In addition, disease susceptibility and some monogenic defects should be further studied as well.

The candidate should have a Master’s degree with distinction or a PhD. Candidates at Master level are expected to pursue a PhD at KU Leuven which involves application for a PhD-grant at FWO (National Science Foundation of Flanders). We are looking primarily for a MSc in bioscience engineering, bio-informatics or veterinary sciences but other MSc degrees in life sciences will be accepted depending on knowledge and skills.

Postdoc candidates should have graduated in animal genetics, preferably with affinity to horse breeding and genetics. We expect the candidates to apply for a postdoc grant and to contribute to the scientific output of the group in terms of publications and grant applications.

Successful candidates should have at least basic training in quantitative or statistical genetics (including experience with relevant software) and/or wet-lab work and are expected to further develop these skills.

Knowledge of Dutch (Leuven is situated in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium) is not a prerequisite but should be compensated by good knowledge of English (see Knowledge of French will be an asset.

Funding is secured for 12 months, allowing for the submission of grants to acquire additional funding. Salary and benefits will be in accordance with the KU Leuven’s job scales (,predoc barema 43 and postdoc barema 44). The actual net salary may depend on your personal situation.
