Interactive Media Arts (IMA) at NYU Shanghai invites applications from art practitioners or media theorists working in emerging media who wish to develop their practice or create new works in an academic environment and expand their research by temporarily relocating to Shanghai, China. We are interested in critically-engaged practitioners in the vanguard of their field that can connect with our students in creative and innovative ways.
IMA combines practice-based work with critical scholarship in the exploration of the social, cultural and aesthetic fundamentals of emerging media. With computation at its core, our curriculum includes but is not limited to creative programming, digital media creation (animation, VR/AR, and time-based media), physical computing and digital fabrication. Our seminars cover the theory, history and semiotics of emerging media, to create a measured balance to the applied component of the program. Over the course of this residency, we invite you to explore our NYU Shanghai community across multiple disciplines and develop your own practice.
This is a visiting appointment as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in Interactive Media Arts. The duration of residency is for one academic year, from August 2024 to May 2025. China-based applicants can optionally choose for a one-semester residency, either from August 2024 to December 2024 or from February 2025 to May 2025.
The Artist / Researcher in Residence is required to teach one elective course of their own design per semester and develop a research project with student involvement that is preferably interdisciplinary and has some form of public outcome, such as talks, workshops, and/or exhibitions.
Terms of employment at NYU Shanghai are comparable to NYU New York and other U.S. institutions.
We seek candidates who have a terminal degree (MFA, MPS, or PhD) as well as a minimum of two years of professional artistic / research practice or two years of full-time teaching experience. Candidates should also have an established record of creative practice with publicly exhibited work in related fields and/or have published work in a discipline related to the theory and practice of emerging media.
NYU Shanghai and IMA have a diverse and international student population. Strong consideration will be given to candidates who have worked outside the United States, or in institutions with an international student body.
Candidates are expected to submit a letter of application, a proposal for a research project to be conducted during the residency, illustrative publications or documentation of creative work, a curriculum vitae, and the names of two referees who have agreed to submit reference letters upon request.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For best consideration, materials should be submitted by no later than December 1, 2023.
