Job summary

The Department of Infectious Disease is seeking two Laboratory Support Assistants to work closely with the Senior Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Managers to assist with the organisation of the Department’s upcoming relocation from St Mary’s to South Kensington.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be required to ensure the Department is supported in the following;

  • Ensuring laboratories are kept clean and tidy including tissue culture, store and cold rooms
  • Identification and inventory via online IT system of items to move to South Kensington and items to be disposed of.
  • Collection, inventory and disposal of laboratory waste (chemicals, clinical waste, WEEE etc.) by agreed routes
  • Arranging for recycling of laboratory waste where appropriate e.g. pipette tip boxes, clean glass chemical bottles.
  • Preparation of solutions as necessary
  • Maintaining and ordering stocks as necessary
  • Monitoring, regular maintenance and electronic record keeping of laboratory equipment including:
    • Laboratory water machines
    • Freezers (filters, de-icing etc.)
    • Glasswashers (checking detergents and solutions are topped up, trap cleaned)
    • Updating the DoID equipment asset list when any changes occur
  • Safety:
    • Assist the laboratory managers with the preparation and supervision of engineer/service visits (planned and reactive maintenance)

Assist the laboratory managers with the preparation for Health and Safety inspections in preparation for the move, and implementing actions associated with these where appropriate.

Essential requirements

The successful applicant will demonstrate the following essential criteria;

  • GCSE in English, mathematics and science (grade C and above) or equivalent
  • Practical experience in a laboratory setting
  • IT literate, with knowledge of Microsoft packages including Excel, Word & Outlook.
  • Discipline and regard for Health and Safety and security at all times.
  • Accurate & attentive to detail, and able to keep reliable records.
  • Able to organise a daily work schedule and to prioritise own work.
  • Able to work as part of a team.
  • Able to interact well with a wide range of people.
  • Willingness to learn necessary laboratory skills, including those required to operate autoclave and industrial dishwasher, and those required for general solution and media preparation (Training will be provided).
  • Ability to learn necessary IT skills, including those required for ordering laboratory consumables (training will be provided).
