The Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Research Scientist, working in Professor Wendy Freedman’s research group. The primary responsibility for this position involves measuring distances based on the Tip of the Red Giant Branch in nearby resolved galaxies. It requires undertaking point-spread-fitting photometry of crowded fields for Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope images. In addition, the position involves running extensive artificial star tests. Besides conducting research, the Research Scientist is expected to present results at conferences and help prepare grants and reports on their research.
Expected project length is 1 year with possibility of reappointment. The expected start date is October 1, 2023.
Required:
- a PhD in physics or astrophysics;
- at least two years of postdoctoral experience;
- experience with DOLPHOT and DAOPHOT;
- python programming skills
