The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology have eight departments and carries out large and varied work within research and education with the purpose to understand people as cultural and social beings. The faculties have around 700 employees and around 4000 students.

The Department of Philosophy has about 70 employees. Research and education at the department is conducted within three subjects: Cognitive science, Practical philosophy and Theoretical philosophy. The Lund | Gothenburg Responsibility Project (LGRP) at the University of Lund is interested in hiring one or two full-time researchers for at least two years starting in September 2022. Please apply by 30th January, 2022.


The Lund | Gothenburg Responsibility Project (LGRP) is a 10-year project (ending 2025) directed by Professor Paul Russell. It is based at Lund University and the University of Gothenburg. LGRP employs and funds postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and distinguished visiting researchers as well as various research activities (conferences, workshops, etc.). LGRP’s mission is to be a leading centre of research in this field with an ever-expanding group of junior and senior researchers associated with the project.

LGRP at Lund is co-financed and hosted by the Department of Philosophy at Lund University. Among the most distinguished and largest in Europe, the Department of Philosophy employs more than 70 faculty members and has over 250 students in its practical philosophy, theoretical philosophy and cognitive science programmes.

Specific subject description

LGRP conducts research on moral responsibility and free will within action theory, normative ethics, metaethics, and legal responsibility.

Job assignments

The position(s) advertised are for at least two years with a possibility of extension (to be determined later). The primary responsibility of the person appointed will be to contribute to LGRP’s research environment, especially with respect to foundational and analytic issues concerning moral responsibility and free will. He or she will also actively participate in LGRP’s research seminar and other relevant research activities at the Philosophy Department. Additional duties may include  teaching, supervision of graduate students, or other teaching-related activities. These tasks will not exceed 20% of the position’s responsibilities. The holder of the position is expected to carry out her/his research in Lund and to be present regularly and consistently at the research group’s various activities and programs (workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.).


The person who the LGRP is looking for is someone who will contribute substantially to the research activity and profile of our project. This person should also be able and willing to advise and coordinate the work of our PhD students and junior researchers. Other things being equal, we would prefer applicants whose academic record and accomplishments are commensurate with those of a mid-career faculty member. More junior applicants will, nevertheless, also be considered. Please note that those who have previously held a position with the LGRP will not be eligible for this position. A distinguished track-record in the research area relevant to the position is expected. Special attention will be given to the applicant’s publications and her/his research plan as well as to their topical fit with LGRP’s core interests and activities. We will only consider applicants whose research plan and prior work strengthen the research group and the project overall. Strong interpersonal skills as well as the ability to plan, organize and disseminate research are also important. Women and applicants from minority backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

  • Project plan (max. 1000 words)

The applicant must attach a project plan to the application, detailing the research the applicant plans to conduct during his/her time as a (senior) researcher. This description should also explain how the proposed project will engage with and contribute to current research on the subject.

  • Writing sample

The applicant must attach two relevant writing samples (no more than 10,000 words each). These should be published papers or book chapters which best represent the applicant’s qualities.

  • Curriculum vitae

The applicant should include a CV of no more than 5 pages.

  • Additional documentation
