The Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI, www.sofi.su.se) is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences  at Stockholm University. The Institute has about 100 employees and conducts research in social policy, welfare, inequality and labor markets. Researchers at SOFI are also involved in teaching, mainly in Economics and Sociology.

Project description

The position as a researcher is connected to the comparative social policy research carried out at SOFI (www.sofi.su.se/forskning/tre-forskningsavdelningar/socpol) and part of the project GENPARENT; Revealing Sources of Gendered Parenthood: A multi-method comparative study of the transition to parenthood in same-sex and opposite-sex couples (www.sofi.su.se/genparent), funded by the European Research Council (ERC). The project focuses on the division of work and care in same-sex and different-sex couples with children in the Nordic countries, the Netherlands and the United States. Based on analyses of population registers, the project aims at increasing knowledge about care-, work- and income-related consequences of the transition to parenthood. 

Main responsibilities

The researcher is expected to bring along plans for his/her own research, collaborate with other project members, and contribute to the development of quantitative research on same-sex couples. The researcher will work with population register data for the Nordic countries. (S)he is expected to perform high level research and publish in international, scientific journals.    

Qualification requirements

Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country in any of the social sciences.

Employment criteria include the quality of earlier research and qualifications, the degree to which the applicant’s research plan and previous research support the overall goals of the GENPARENT project, based on quantitative analyses of large scale survey and register data.

The applicant should be fluent in spoken and written English and must have a good understanding of one of the Nordic languages, as the position includes analysis of Nordic population register data as well as policy documents. Experience of working with popoulation registers and familiarity with complexities of identifying various family constellations in large scale quantitative data is an advantage.

Terms of employment

The position will be filled for a fixed term of up to one year, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Starting date October 1, 2021 or as per agreement
