Post-Doctoral Researcher - 2 Positions, Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century (ISS21)

3 Years, Fixed-term, Whole-time Posts

Position summary

The Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century seeks to appoint 2 Post-Doctoral Researchers to work on a 3 year project, Envisioning a care-centred society within and beyond Covid (CARE-VISION), funded by the Carolan Research Trust.

As part of ISS21’s wider CARE21 initiative designed to advance interdisciplinary understandings of care and care practices in contemporary Irish society, and develop and consolidate caring research and capacity in the Institute, CARE-VISION is a 3 year research project designed to explore how we might re-imagine the practices and ethics of care in Ireland in response to and beyond the Covid19 pandemic. Investigating and advancing theoretical and practical understandings of a ‘feminist ethics of care’, the project will explore how we can understand and rethink care practices and relations in two contexts: (i) informal, unpaid, care settings (such as homes and sites of family caring) and (ii) sites of formal, congregated settings (such as nursing homes, residential centres) as well as paid care provided in the home. The project will seek to engage carers, those who are cared for, and those who work in care policy arenas to explore how we can re-envision care and care ethics in Irish society within and beyond a time of pandemic.

The two Post-Doctoral Researchers will be based in ISS21 and will be a key part of the CARE21 research team in UCC. They will be involved in designing and conducting secondary and primary research, including developing and using qualitative and creative research methodologies, and will be expected to engage with wider stakeholders in the care policy arena, including carers’ organisations and policymakers. They will also play a key role in supporting and promoting the CARE21 initiative in ISS21, and developing interdisciplinary care research agendas in the Institute.
