Overview:  

We are seeking a Software Engineer – Data Engineering who will focus on the design, development and operation of complex solutions needed to meet the program sponsor’s requirements..  This position resides in the, Data Engineering Group in the RPD Data and AI Systems Research Section Computer Science and Engineering Division, Comoputing and Computational Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Contribute to requirements definition, design, and development of applications providing solutions to sponsor needs.

  • Conduct applied research into new and emerging technologies and tools to identify opportunities for integration, application, and innovation.

  • Assist in deploying releases to development, test and production environments.

  • Collaborate with team members to support production applications.

  • Provide technical assistance to other staff and customers as necessary.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and 3+ years of related experience.

  • Experience with multiple languages including Python, Java, C++, C#, Javascript, SQL and/or Oracle PL/SQL.

  • Demonstrated experience working with text data and and natural language processing techniques

  • Demonstrated experience working with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch and Tensorflow

  • A broad understanding of the application aspects of natural language processing and data science methodologies and techniques, (e.g. supervised and unsupervised learning, feature selection/engineering, hyperparameter optimization, dimensionality reduction, word embeddings, etc.)

  • Experience building web applications and their supporting background data services using modern technologies.

  • Experience with any of the following database systems/types: relational (PostgresSQL, Oracle, MySQL), document (AWS DocumentDB, MongoDB, etc.), spatial, graph, and other unstructured databases.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills.

  • Commitment to continuous learning to serve in an ever-changing computing landscape.

 

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain a DOE L or Q clearance. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with agile software development methodologies.

  • Experience with version control systems like Git.

  • Experience with automated deployment and testing environments.

  • Experience with scientific data and data formats is a plus.

  • Experience with High Performance Computing environments is a plus.

  • Experience developing desktop applications for Windows, MacOS and Linux is a plus.
