The Institute of Asian Studies is recruiting four new staff members.

The Institute of Asian Studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam is a research institute dedicated to producing and disseminating cutting-edge knowledge about the societies, economies, politics, cultures and histories of the Asian region. As a research institute, we are interested in candidates who are very productive in research and publish in top academic journals, who have a solid experience in international collaboration and who can contribute to the IAS “Asia in transition” Springer book series.

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is the leading higher education institution in Brunei Darussalam. It partners with more than 100 world-leading universities and institutions spanning 6 continents in more than 40 countries. UBD entered the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for the very first time this year with a global position in the 401 to 500 band. This makes UBD the fourth ranked university in ASEAN in one of the most influential university rankings in the world. UBD has also shown a steady rise up the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings. It currently ranks at 298 in the latest release, 25 places from last year's 323, confirming its status as an institution that is internationally recognised for excellence in teaching and research.

The Institute of Asian Studies is looking for talented researchers and dedicated lecturers in the following areas:

1)      Asian Migration, Mobility and Diaspora

The migration of people, ideas and capital has been a critical influence in the development of Asia, both in the past and present. The intra-regional movements of people such as Indonesians and Filipinos and within Borneo have not always been given the attention they deserve. In the age of globalization Asians have also formed diasporic communities in North America, Europe and the Middle East. IAS is looking for a scholar in Asian migration in Asia and outside Asia who can embrace the interactions between migration, mobility and diasporas. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Sociology, Anthropology, History, Geography, Economics, or a related field.

2)      Borneo Studies

The successful candidate may have a focus on environmental transformations and the conservation and protection of biodiversity in Borneo. He may also address a range of modern issues affecting the populations and landscapes of the island: among others, urbanisation and the emergence of an educated middle class; tourism development; the development of popular culture and the media and changing identities in their widest sense. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Sociology, Anthropology, History, Geography, and Economics.

3)      Language, Culture and Communications in Asia

The use and transformation of language in the context of inter-Asian relationships and interactions, including the increasing importance of trans-Asian popular culture through the media, internet, film, television, music and performance, tourism and migration is getting more importance with the widespread use of social media. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Sociology, Anthropology, and the multidisciplinary fields of socio-linguistics, cultural studies, literature, media and film studies, post-colonial studies, and ethnic studies.


4)      Human Security in Southeast Asia

Addressing the interdependence of human security in a time of pandemic crisis and its associated material risks and psychological stress is a major challenge for policy and governance in Southeast Asia. It has major implications for public health, livelihoods, choices and opportunities of communities and individuals across the region. This area of research is open to scholars who are broadly interdisciplinary in outlook and interested in the ways in which human security, is understood and interpreted in Southeast Asia. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Human Geography, psychology or a related field.

All applicants must have a PhD from a recognized university, and demonstrated outstanding record of publication in top-indexed academic journals and renowned publishers. He should be able to teach modules in a trans-disciplinary way in areas of in social sciences.

The positions are open for all levels of position: Assistant Professor, Senior Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor.
