FRIB is seeking a Department Manager for the High Power Targetry department.

The Department Manager will lead a diverse department responsible for all high power targetry scope in the FRIB Laboratory covering R&D, design, fabrication, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance.  The Department Manager will manage the following groups:  Charge Stripper Group, the Target and Beam Dump Systems Group, the Remote Handling Group, and the Non-conventional Utility Group.  The Department Manager will be given an academic appointment in the Continuing Appointment System at FRIB.

Major Position Responsibilities

  • Deliver FRIB project scope and the scope to achieve FRIB mission
  • Develop and execute a targeted R&D plan to support science-driven upgrades, enhancing discovery opportunity
  • Develop and execute a value-enhancement plan, increase availability and reducing total cost of ownership

Department Manager Responsibilities

  • Assure delivery of work scope within cost and schedule, safely and with high quality
  • Coordinate delivery of work with other department managers and division directors
  • Maintain departmental core competencies through well-articulated, efficient and effective management systems
  • Support division-wide and laboratory-wide management systems
  • Define, publish, and communicate department goals, milestones, and performance objectives
  • Monitor, publish, and communicate performance metrics against the performance objectives
  • Manage resources delegated to department in compliance with regulations to achieve performance objectives
  • Promote a culture of safety, respect, commitment to excellence, transparency, accountability, inclusion, and integrity
  • Develop and maintain a highly-qualified staff through an organized program for professional staff development
  • Assure that all departmental staff are trained in articulated roles and responsibilities

Required Degree

Masters -Engineering

Minimum Requirements

  • Masters degree in engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 15+ years staff management experience with progressively increasing responsibility
  • Must be able to work with export controlled technology

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in supporting a federally-funded scientific user facility operation
  • Experience in communicating with federal and scientific stakeholders
  • Nationally recognized leader in field of hadron interaction with materials
