Senior Lecturer in Mathematics with Specialization in Computational Mathematics

Lund University

Lund University was founded in 1666 and ranks repeatedly as one of the world's top 100 universities. There are 40,000 students and 7,600 employees in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our quest to understand, explain and improve our world and people's conditions.

At the Faculty of Science, research and education is conducted within biology, astronomy, physics, geosciences, chemistry, mathematics and environmental science. The business is run at nine institutions gathered within the northern university area. The faculty has approximately 1,500 students, 330 graduate students and 700 employees.

The Mathematics Center has about 130 employees, of whom 30 at the Department of Mathematics NF (Faculty of Science) where the service is located. Other departments are Mathematics LTH with numerical analysis and Mathematical statistics. The Mathematics Center conducts research in computational mathematics and numerical analysis, algebra, operator theory and complex analysis, linear and non-linear partial differential equations, differential geometry, dynamic systems, image analysis, machine learning and computer vision, as well as mathematical statistics, probability theory and mathematics didactics. The education of the students leads to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees as well as to the LTH to a master's degree.

The research in computational mathematics and numerical analysis at the Mathematics Center is focused on numerical methods for differential equations. We are looking for a candidate related to the existing research activity, but who can add new aspects, eg. high performance computing, differential equation-limited optimization, uncertainty quantification, adaptivity, stochastic differential equations, model reduction or connection to computer-based models.

Job Description

The tasks mainly comprise research and teaching within undergraduate and postgraduate education (especially related to computational mathematics and numerical analysis). The teaching includes supervision of thesis and doctoral students. Teaching amounts to a maximum of 60% of full-time. Institutional administrative tasks may be included in the employment. The content of the tasks, as well as the distribution between research and teaching, may change over time.

The employee is expected to contribute to the research group in numerical analysis and computational mathematics, among others. through research collaboration and seminar activities. The employee is also expected to work actively to seek external financing of the activities at the department and to develop interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration with both university units and with other universities.

Eligible to be employed as a senior lecturer is the one who has shown pedagogical skills and has completed a doctoral degree or has the corresponding scientific competence or some other professional skill that is of importance with regard to the subject's subject content and the tasks that must be included in the employment (according to HF 4 ch. 4§ ).

For eligibility for this service, the applicant must have obtained a doctoral degree in mathematics or numerical analysis or have equivalent competence.

Higher education education is required for the position at least five weeks or that equivalent knowledge has been acquired in another way. In special cases, exceptions may be made to this requirement.

As a general requirement for teachers at Lund University, it is necessary to be suitable for and have the other skills needed to fulfill the duties well.

Assessment Criteria

  • The applicant must have documented scientific skills in computational mathematics.
  • The applicant must have a very high international level as a researcher in relation to career length.
  • The applicant's research profile should be related to the existing research on numerical methods for differential equations at the Mathematics Center, but should add new aspects.
  • The applicant must have varied and documented teaching experience.
  • Ability to teach in English is a requirement.
  • The applicant must have experience of supervising thesis workers.
  • Documented ability to obtain research grants in national and / or international competition is highly merit.
  • Experience of interdisciplinary collaboration with other subjects is also highly meritorious.
  • Experience of course development and a reflective approach to teaching is highly meritorious.
  • Experience of supervising doctoral students is an advantage.
  • Documented ability to interact with the surrounding society and to communicate science and the importance of research to society is also important and merit.

The appointment will also consider how the applicant can strengthen and supplement the department's research and teaching in the subject area. Applicants must present their current research and a research plan for the next few years, and how they can contribute to the research at the department. Scientific qualifications will be assessed mainly on the basis of quality and number of expertly reviewed scientific publications.

The examination of the pedagogical skill should be given as much care as the examination of the scientific skill.

In connection with the appointment, consideration will be given to Lund University's employment arrangement .

We expect that a non-Swedish-speaking executive within three years acquires sufficient knowledge of Swedish in order to be able to teach and communicate with the university's various bodies in this language.
