Department and Research Environment

The position is based at the Department of Health and Rehabilitation, within the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. The Department conducts education and research in:

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Physiotherapy

  • Speech and Language Pathology

  • Audiology

The Unit of Physiotherapy is a dynamic education and research environment with close collaboration with the healthcare sector. Education is offered at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, and interdisciplinary research is conducted in national and international partnerships.

Physiotherapy

Subject Description

Physiotherapy focuses on human movement and examines how movement, body awareness, habits, and lifestyle patterns influence health across the lifespan.


Duties

The position as Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) is a qualifying, career-development appointment.

Research (minimum 50%)

  • Formulate and conduct independent research in physiotherapy

  • Develop research questions, designs, and theoretical frameworks

  • Collect, analyse, and interpret data

  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals

  • Apply for external research funding

  • Actively contribute to departmental research environments and seminars

Teaching and Academic Service

  • Teach at first-cycle (Bachelor’s) and second-cycle (Master’s) levels

  • Teaching at third-cycle (doctoral) level may occur

  • Integrate clinical expertise into teaching

  • Course and programme development, coordination, and administration

  • Teaching is conducted primarily in Swedish

Applicants without formal university pedagogical training at the University of Gothenburg must complete such training, or demonstrate equivalent competence, within one year of employment.


Eligibility

Eligibility requirements are set out in:

  • The Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Hold a PhD in Physiotherapy or equivalent research expertise

  • Normally have been awarded the PhD within seven years of the application deadline

Earlier PhD awards may be considered in cases of exceptional circumstances (e.g. parental leave, sick leave), which must be clearly documented in the application.

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to teach in Swedish and English.

Scientific Expertise

Assessment includes:

  • Quality and relevance of peer-reviewed publications

  • Ability to obtain external research funding

  • National and international research collaborations

  • Relevance and quality of the submitted research plan

  • Long-term academic development potential

Pedagogical Expertise

Assessment includes:

  • Documented teaching experience at first- and second-cycle levels

  • Teaching within physiotherapy or closely related fields

  • Ability to integrate clinical competence into teaching

  • Course and programme development experience

  • Certified training in higher education pedagogy (merit)

Collaboration, Leadership, and Clinical Expertise

  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines and with external partners

  • Administrative and leadership skills

  • Extensive clinical experience as a licensed physiotherapist

  • Demonstrated potential to meet promotion requirements to Senior Lecturer

Personal suitability and collaborative ability are essential components of the overall assessment.


Employment Conditions

  • Employment type: Fixed-term qualifying position

  • Duration: 4 years (full-time, 100%)

  • Placement: Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology

  • Start date: As agreed

The appointment may be extended by up to two additional years in cases of parental leave, sick leave, or similar circumstances. Promotion requirements to Senior Lecturer are defined by the Faculty Board of the Sahlgrenska Academy.
