The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University provides a broad international environment for research and teaching. The Department's research covers three collaborative and partially integrated sections: Cancer, infections and immunity as well as genetics and genomics. Description of the subject area: The position as senior lecturer in experimental immunology is included in the section of infections and immunity. In this subject area, research and education are conducted within innate and adaptive immunity.

Eligibility: According to Chapter 4 Section 3 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, a person qualified for appointment as senior lecturer has demonstrated teaching skills and has been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise. According to the general eligibility for teachers in the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University (AR, Section 5), the applicant shall demonstrate skills to cooperate and have the personal qualifications necessary for carrying out the duties of the position well.

The research expertise must have been demonstrated through independent research work of high quality. The applicant's contribution to the international and national scientific community must be assessed, among other things, on the basis of the quality and scope of scientific publication (AR, Section 34). The requirements of international qualification must be assessed with regard to the nature of the subject and specific conditions.

Teaching expertise in accordance with the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University is required (AR, Section 22). The applicant should have completed ten weeks of relevant training in learning and teaching in higher education, or acquired equivalent knowledge by some other means. If exceptional reasons exist, the prerequisite course in learning and teaching in higher education must be completed during the first two years of employment.

The applicant shall have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English.

If exceptional reasons exist, an applicant who currently lacks the ability to teach in Swedish is expected to be able to acquire that ability within two years.

Assessment criteria: In the selection among eligible applicants, equal weight will be assigned to research expertise and teaching expertise. When assessing the scientific proficiency, special emphasis will be placed on research merits that strengthen, complement and have a niche that is distinguished from ongoing research in the field of experimental immunology at IMBIM. Research with a focus on understanding basic immunological mechanisms, both in normal function and during pathological conditions, is particularly meritorious. The potential to initiate, drive and participate in broader research projects with researchers within the entire section for infections and immunity, other sections within IMBIM and also other areas within Uppsala University, especially within the Faculty of Medicine, will also be afforded consideration.

Scientific skill refers to research merits. In assessing research expertise, research quality and independence must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as demonstrated capacity to interact with others, both within academia and in the wider community (AR, Section 20). Pedagogic skill refers to merits in teaching. In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise (AR, Section 22). When the University appoints new teachers, applicants are selected that, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

Assessment criteria, other expertise: Administrative and leadership expertise are significant to the position and will be assigned weight. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to inform the public about research and development will be considered.

Leadership expertise is demonstrated through the ability to lead operations and employees, make decisions, assume responsibility and motivate and provide others with the conditions necessary to attain common goals. The ability to coordinate the group and contribute to generating commitment, participation and job satisfaction and the ability to manage conflicts are further examples of demonstrated expertise. According to the Appointment Regulations, Section 29, administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organize and prioritize work in an efficient and task-related manner, as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities, as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality. According to GA Section 10, the following apply: When assessing collaborative expertise, experience with and expertise in education and outreach, editorships and other activities related to knowledge exchange between the University and the surrounding community, as well as experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, shall be of significance.
