Senior Lecturer/Director of Graduate Studies

The Department of Physics at the University of Chicago seeks a Senior Lecturer to serve as its Director of Graduate Studies (DGS). This non-tenure track appointment will be at the academic rank of Senior Lecturer and will begin September 1, 2019.

The primary role of the DGS is to oversee the department's Ph.D. program and serve as the academic adviser to our approximately 200 graduate students. In addition to oversight of the graduate program, this Senior Lecturer will also assist the Department Chair with the general administration of the department and will teach one, one-quarter course per academic year.

At the time of appointment, successful applicants must have completed all requirement for a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field. Demonstrable broad knowledge of the field and outstanding effectiveness in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels are essential. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of professional experience in an academic setting, strong organizational skills, and a genuine interest in working with students. Any industrial experience is a plus. Our department strives to maintain a welcoming and inclusive culture and the Director of Graduate Studies must be engaged with and supportive of this effort.
