Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 46.000 students, 7.300 employees and a turnover of SEK 7.3 billion.

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University provides a broad international environment for research and teaching. The Department's research covers Three collaborative and partially integrated sections: Cancer, infections and defense as well as genetics and genomics. More info:

The Lindblad-Toh laboratory’s research programs within the collaborative environment of Uppsala University, Faculty of Medicine and SciLifeLab focus on, but are not restricted to, using comparative genomics to unravel the complexities of complex disease, spanning cancer, innate and acquired immunity, and neurobiology. To achieve this goal, we layer population level genome-wide association studies, with an array of omics and traditional genetic, biochemical, and physiological techniques applied to canine models, human cell lines and patient samples.

We are seeking an innovative, energetic and collaborative individual to work as part of a team to extend our 200 mammals project (a.k.a. Zoonomia), an initiative spanning from annotating the human genome with single base evolutionary constraint to understanding canine and human disease and positive selection, particularly on brain function. This pioneering work uses comparative genomics and large-scale state of the art laboratory and bioinformatic techniques to better understand genome regulation.

Job Description: To experimentally perform comparative and functional genomics approaches to study the regulatory landscape of the canine and human genomes. To work closely with a team of bioinformaticians and comparative genomics scientists, aiming at understanding the role of evolutionary constraint on genome regulation in canine and human evolution and disease. Your work will have a focus on laboratory techniques for generating and analyzing functional genomics data sets, including ATAC-seq, single cell RNA-seq, HiC and ChIP-seq on canine brain samples. The optimal candidate for this position also has some bioinformatic experience. Other functional genomics laboratory techniques in this project could include massively parallel reporter assays (MPRA) and CRISPR/Cas9 as appropriate. Some teaching may be included.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or similar work experience in comparative genomics, comparative genetics, functional genomics is critical. A high emphasis will be placed in assessing the suitability of the successful candidate for the team.
  • Several years of documented experience in and profound knowledge about laboratory functional genomics techniques such as ATAC-seq, single-cell RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, CRISPR/Cas9 or MPRA is essential.
  • Bioinformatic experience from high-throughput DNA sequencing analysis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is critical.
  • Emphasis for the final decision on employment for this position will be placed on personal characteristics such as flexibility, communication and collaborative skills, ability to work independently and scientific maturity and creativity.

Salary: Individual salaries.

Starting date: The position is available as soon as possible or as otherwise agreed.
