  • Be inspired, every day
  • Drive your own learning at one of the world’s top 80 universities
  • Take your career in exciting, rewarding directions

Everyone needs a platform to launch a satisfying career. At Monash, we give you the space and support to take your career in all kinds of exciting new directions. You’ll have access to quality research, infrastructure and learning facilities, opportunities to collaborate internationally, as well as the grants you’ll need to publish your work. We’re a university full of energetic and enthusiastic minds, driven to challenge what’s expected, expand what we know, and learn from other inspiring, empowering thinkers.

Who we are

Monash Biomedical Imaging (MBI) is the University’s research platform of excellence for biomedical imaging. MBI hosts state of the art MRI facilities for animal and human imaging, and radiochemistry, molecular and X-ray imaging facilities for investigating small animal models. These capabilities are supported by expert personnel and a suite of ancillary facilities, including patient support, radiobiology and (limited) short-term animal holding. MBI conducts basic and translational research of the highest quality, increases skills in biomedical imaging amongst research staff and higher degree by research students, and provides user access to internal and external researchers. These core drivers of the facility’s activities aim to provide cutting edge and high-quality research imaging modalities to biomedical and non-biomedical researchers.

MBI is a node of the National Imaging Facility (NIF) (see anif.org.au) and provides access to biomedical imaging research infrastructure and facilities of the highest quality for internal and external researchers, and undertakes training and skills development of research staff and higher degree students in biomedical imaging techniques. These core drivers of the facility’s activities have significant overlap with those of the Imaging and Medical Beam Line (IMBL) of the Australian Synchrotron, which similarly strives to provide cutting edge imaging modalities to biomedical and non-biomedical researchers for high quality research.

The Opportunity

As the Senior Research Fellow – Radiochemist you will lead the development of radiochemistry capabilities, including research radiopharmaceuticals (therapeutics and diagnostics) at MBI.

A core part of your role will be undertaking research into the development and application of novel radiochemistry labelling techniques for a wide range of molecular imaging studies and lead the radiochemistry team/services - providing specialised advice and expertise to MBI staff and users.

To succeed in this role you will require a PhD in chemistry, radiochemistry or other relevant discipline as you will be undertaking research and development of new and existing radiopharmaceuticals, with a focus on positron emitting radiopharmaceuticals.

In this position you will play a key role in the leadership of precision radiopharmaceutical development and operations for both preclinical and clinical applications. As the Senior Research Fellow you will also make important contributions in the area of radiopharmaceutical sciences in developing new cell targeting agents (i.e., small molecules, peptides, antibodies, and nanoparticles), and develop new molecular imaging and/or therapeutic tracers at MBI.

As the National Imaging Facility (NIF) Facility Fellow (Radiochemistry), you will collaborate with researchers from Monash University and other NIF nodes, including in the disciplines of inorganic/organic synthesis, bioconjugation chemistry, radiochemistry, and the development of tracers for biomedical imaging.

Your considerable expertise will enable MBI to provide radiochemistry capabilities to Monash-based and external facility users from the NIF community, from industry/commercial based organisations, and from other Universities.

Playing a critical role in the success of NIF, you will provide strategic advice to imaging and non-imaging scientists as required. Additionally, you will actively participate in national initiatives and various networking and promotional opportunities for inter-nodal collaborations and communicate NIF’s capability to the wider scientific community, both in academia and industry.

This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

At Monash University, we are committed to being a Child Safe organisation. Some positions at the University will require the incumbent to hold a valid Working with Children Check.

Your application must address the selection criteria. Please refer to "How to apply for Monash Jobs".

In the context of COVID-19, the University is required to comply with various health directions issued from time to time by the Chief Health Officer. Further information concerning vaccination requirements and the obligations on Monash University to collect, record and hold vaccination information about employees is available at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Victoria, please select COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination (Workers) Directions.
