Role Description

Applications are invited for a Senior Research Technician position in the lab of Prof. Ian Bancroft in the Department of Biology at the University of York to work on BBSRC-funded and Defra-funded projects investigating the relationships between genomic diversity and trait variation in Brassica napus and Brassica juncea.

The post holder will work as part of a research team working with Brassica species using chromatographic analysis of metabolites, genomics and molecular biology techniques. The post holder will be expected to conduct high-quality research, under the supervision of senior colleagues, working independently to contribute to the goals of the research team.

Role

The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in biology or equivalent experience. Applicants are expected to demonstrate how they meet the essential requirements of the post as indicated in the person specification and should have experience in growth and maintenance of plant species, preparation of DNA and/or RNA from plants, PCR and/or qPCR with plant-sourced materials and have some experience of chromatographic techniques such as GC or HPLC. The successful candidate will be highly motivated to learn and perform new techniques and contribute enthusiastically to the research project and operation of the lab.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • BSc degree  in biology or equivalent experience
  • IT skills for a wide range of applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience in growth and maintenance plants
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques
