Role Description


The York Trials Unit is one of the UKs leading centres for the design and analysis of randomised controlled trials.  Due to the continued success of the Unit, we are now seeking to appoint a new statistician at Grade 6.  You will join a team of statisticians under the supervision of Professor Catherine Hewitt.  The post offers the opportunity to be part of a large and successful multi-disciplinary Department, renowned for its methodological expertise and commitment to policy relevant research.

A brief overview of the role, project and or department


You will conduct high quality statistical analyses of trials, undertake statistical programming for checking, manipulating, summarising and analysing data, and assist in the development of research proposals. You will provide statistical expertise at all stages of research studies supported by the trials unit, from inception to analysis. You will be encouraged to undertake dissemination of your research through publications, seminars and conference presentations and contribute to the identification of possible new areas of research. You will assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects. You will assist with postgraduate teaching in statistics and support statistical aspects of dissertation supervision.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • First degree and a higher degree in a relevant quantitative subject or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge in statistics to engage in high quality research and of a range of statistical techniques and methodologies
  • Research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department’s research strategy and goals
  • Knowledge of how to design and analyse data from randomised controlled trials
  • Ability to program using a range of computer software packages (eg. Stata, R)
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines and use initiative in problem solving
  • Ability to log information in an efficient and accurate manner
  • Ability to explain statistical concepts in simple terms to individuals from non technical backgrounds
  • Ability to contribute to writing of a statistical plan for research grant applications
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience of writing up research work for publication
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals for own and joint research
  • Competency to conduct individual and collaborative research projects
  • Ability to contribute to the process of securing funds
  • Ability to present at conferences or exhibit work at appropriate events
  • Experience of carrying out independent and collaborative research
  • Attention to detail, collaborative ethos and an enthusiasm for the subject matter of the project(s)
  • Positive attitude to colleagues and students
  • Commitment to personal development and updating of knowledge and skills
  • Willingness to supervise/co-supervise Masters students and a willingness to mark Masters dissertations
